Reading the sheet

1  The spine

The vertical line is equilibrium, not zero, and it does not sit in the middle. The field is exactly as wide as the largest add reading plus the largest drop reading — 400,062 managers arriving against 258,684 leaving. Neither side is normalised to its own maximum, so the asymmetry on the sheet is the asymmetry in the feed: over the window, adds outweigh drops 1.63 to one.

2  Roman Wilson’s current

The trending feed counts hands. It does not count what those hands will pay. In the same snapshot, FantasyCalc rates Allen 195th overall in redraft at a value of 10 — a thirty-day move of +6. The field reads as a continuous fluid. It is in fact 121 stacked ribbons, and it does not treat them equally. The strip below is the sheet’s own cross-section at the mean reading — the same 121 currents, at the same scale, laid flat.

Width is the only encoding here, as on the plate: each block is one current at its mean reading, at the sheet’s own scale. The outer frame is the field’s full width, which is set by the peak reading — so the mean does not fill it. The height of the strip carries nothing.

Only eight of the 121 currents have an edge. The plate strokes a seam along the four heaviest ribbons on each side and no others, so the remaining 113 are present as ink but not as boundaries. Those eight are not a small part of the picture — the top four carry 52.4% of add volume and 16.5% of drop volume — but the field implies a continuous surface where there are in fact 121 discrete bands.

27 currents are drawn narrower than three pixels. At the mean reading, 15 of the 60 add currents and 12 of the 61 drop currents are under 3px wide on a 1,600px sheet. Together they carry 3.2% of add volume and 4.0% of drop volume. They are on the plate, and they are not legible as individuals. Only the four named players are annotated; the other 117 are unlabelled.

No real reading is dropped. The plate skips any ribbon narrower than 0.6px, which is 295 managers. All 4,074 cells that fall below that line are zero-fill — quarter-hours in which a player was outside the top fifty entirely — so every one of the 19,400 observations is drawn. Absence and zero look the same on the sheet; in the traces above, absence breaks the line instead.

Measured. Ribbon width at any height is the manager count in that reading, multiplied by one constant for the whole sheet. Vertical position is real elapsed time, not reading index, so the irregular early cadence stays visible: 194 captures over 49.8 hours, median gap 15 minutes, 2 gaps longer than twenty minutes, the largest 84. Every figure printed on the plate and on this page is recomputed from those readings.

Derived. Particle speed and turbulence come from the reading-to-reading change in each series, normalised against the 96th percentile of change across all 121 currents and smoothed over five readings. That is a real quantity rendered through a chosen transfer function: the ordering is faithful, the absolute amount of visible chaos is a decision.

Drawing devices, encoding nothing. The number of filaments per ribbon is set to hold areal density constant, so that ink reads as volume rather than as a count of anything. Wobble amplitude, the gutter between bundles, the film grain, the vignette and the drift of the particles down the page are composition. The ember accent used across this page is chrome; like every accent in this imprint, it carries no data.

Scope. Sleeper’s trending endpoint reports the 50 most-added and 50 most-dropped players at each poll; every capture in this window carries exactly 50 rows on each side. 121 distinct player-currents appear across the window; a player outside the top 50 at a given quarter-hour has no reading, not a reading of zero. The window is one snapshot and is not a season.
